Dog owners warned to keep pets under control

Newham Council’s animal welfare officers, parks constabulary officers and police have launched an initiative that aims to encourage responsible dog ownership and make parks and open spaces safe places for all visitors.

As well as high visibility patrols in parks, the team will provide education and security advice to dog owners or those considering getting a dog.

Officers will also take enforcement and seizure action against owners of dangerous dogs. Recently, three dogs, all believed to be pit bull type and four puppies were seized from an address in East Ham. A man was arrested and released on bail pending further enquires.

Councillor Ian Corbett, executive member for anti-social behaviour said: “Owning a dog is a big responsibility. If you are looking to get a dog, you need to think carefully about the commitment that it involves. If you already have a dog, you need to consider if you are fulfilling your obligations as its owner.

“I would urge existing and potential dog owners to take advantage of the support and advice that is offered by the council.

“Any dog owners who do not take their responsibility seriously and allow their pets to become a nuisance will face the full force of the law.”

The Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 prohibits four types of dog: Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino and Fila Brasileiro. Anyone who may have unknowingly bought one of these dogs should seek advice from the animal welfare service.

Owners are required to make sure their dog wears a collar and tag. The team provides free microchipping and tattooing for £20. This helps to reunite the owner with their dog, should they go missing. It also makes it easier to settle legal ownership of dogs in the event of a dispute.

Anyone with information about dangerous dogs should contact the animal welfare service on 020 8586 9739.
